4 Reasons to Never Use Infomercial Products on Your Windshields

August 12, 2022

A cracked windshield can create stress and anxiety for anyone who owns a car. Typically, people will look for a quick solution to windshield problems, and, unfortunately, answers often come presented in the form of infomercials. Infomercials use quick clips, cheap prices, and charismatic hosts to try to woo viewers into purchases.

Over the years, the As Seen on TV product lines have featured a wide variety of windshield crack and repair solutions. Unfortunately, people buy the products and the results often lead to more problems. If you have windshield damage or issues, check out some of the reasons you should never use those infomercial products and why professional care matters.

1. False Advertisements

Many windshield repair commercials make products appear too good to be true and this is because they likely are. Products could showcase a quick-fix crack repair that seems to give you a brand new windshield. Unfortunately, the videos, clips, and pictures you see are all a part of the production magic used to make the commercials look so convincing.

They will use quick cuts and not show the true process to use the repair product. The finished and repaired windshield could be one that wasn't even damaged in the first place. On top of the editing, the product itself will entice viewers with a low price point. However, in the end, you get what you pay for.

The products are made for quick and cheap sales. The price is often cheap enough that consumers do not worry about returning the product and the company makes off with the profit. When you need to repair something as important as your car windshield, you do not want to use a poor solution just to save a few bucks.

2. Resin & Quick Glue Repair Kit Damage

Many windshield infomercial repair products rely on resin or quick drying glue to repair windshields. If you've never repaired or fixed auto glass, then you should learn about all the problems that can occur when you handle these products. First, the crack or chip could have debris that gets caught inside when the resin dries. The debris could create a visual distraction.

You could also end up leaving air bubbles in the crack if you do not apply the resin properly or the resin slides down to trap air inside. An air bubble can expand and contract based on the temperature and cause your windshield crack to get even larger.

The resin itself may not dry flat and smooth on the windshield. You may run into issues in which you have bumps or bulges left on the glass. Not only does the appearance look bad, but certain angles can reflect strong beams of light and create visual glares or distractions while you drive.

Some of the products require the natural heat from the sun to air dry, so a random rain storm or cloudy day could cause issues for the resin and windshield repair. Many of the kits only include one repair option, so if you mess up, you would have to buy a whole other kit to start over again.

3. Windshield Technology Damage

Electric cars, hybrid vehicles, and newer models contain a lot of updated technology that connects right to the windshield. Windshields may include built-in thermometers, rain sensors, or GPS navigation connections. Windshield infomercial products often do not take into account these elements.

If you go to take on a repair with the products, you could do harm to the technology inside your windshield. The products could block sensors or result in more damage. These pieces of technology are small and hard to see, so you do not want to take a chance and risk damage or major issues down the line.

In the end, you could end up paying even more for your windshield than you originally intended. You may need to replace the technology in the windshield so your vehicle operates normally again.

4. Insurance Claims & Extra Costs

When you have windshield damage, you may have insurance coverage to help pay for the damage. The last thing you want is to have a claim denied because you attempted an unauthorized repair on your windshield. A windshield technician can tell if you attempted any repairs or changes to the glass.

You would end up wasting a lot of money if you pay for an infomercial product, fail to repair the windshield, and then have to pay out of pocket if insurance does not cover the additional costs. The glass insurance will help you work with a trusted auto glass technician and can ensure your windshield repair goes smoothly for the cheapest cost possible.
